Thigh Lift Atlanta

What is a Thigh Lift?

Thighplasty, or thigh lift, reshapes the thighs by removing excess skin and fat, to improve the overall appearance of the thighs. A thigh lift can reduce sagging in the inner, outer, or circumferential thigh. It is often a procedure performed on patients who have lost a great deal of weight.

The Thigh Lift Procedure

Thighplasty takes about two hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Incision patterns vary based on the areas to be treated and degree of correction required. Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence will consult with each patient to ensure incisions are made in the most effective manner for each particular case. Types of thighplasty include a medial thigh lift, a circumferential upper thigh lift, and an inner thigh lift.

A medial thigh lift tightens skin and fat on the upper part of the inner thigh. An incision is made along the groin crease extending back to the buttock crease as needed. The skin is then lifted and excess fat and skin removed to improve the appearance of the upper, inner thigh. Improving the contours of the outer thigh as well may require an incision extending from the groin circumferentially around the upper thigh. An incision is made at the top of the leg, about where the lower edge of a bikini bottom or underwear would be. A small amount of skin is removed and then the remaining skin is pulled up, which tightens the skin along both sides of the leg. When extensive reduction in skin is required, the groin incision may be combined with a longitudinal incision from the groin to the inner knee to improve the entire contour of the upper leg.

For a thighplasty Dr. Lawrence will mark the thighs before surgery while the patient is standing. In all types of thighplasty, incisions are sutured carefully with deep sutures to ensure that there is no sagging after the incisions heal. During the procedure, drains are put in places that allow excess fluid to drain after surgery. The drains are usually removed after several days.

If there is an excessive amount of fatty tissue on the thighs, liposuction may be recommended to reduce the size of the thigh prior to removing the skin. The thighplasty procedure is then performed 3–6 months after liposuction when the tissue has healed.

Recovering from Thigh Lift Surgery

Recovery time depends on the extent of the procedure, although most patients experience minimal pain that is alleviated with medication. In all cases, patients should rest as much as possible and avoid leg movement. Patients should plan to take 2–3 weeks off work to recover. Bruising and swelling are usually gone within a month and patients are able to return to all normal activities within 6 weeks.
