Otoplasty Atlanta

Large, protruding or otherwise deformed ears can make you or your child very self-conscious. There are many stories of children being teased or taunted at school because of oversized or protruding ears. Otoplasty surgery with plastic surgery Atlanta provider Dr. Marisa Lawrence can correct these aesthetic concerns and give you or your child a greater sense of self-confidence.

What Does Ear Surgery Accomplish?

Ear surgery is a cosmetic procedure that improves the size, shape, proportion and position of the ears. It can correct ears that are large, protruding or abnormally shaped, and fix small deformities. Ear surgery is commonly performed on children to prevent them from enduring trauma from teasing and bullying at school because of the appearance of their ears. However, ear surgery should not be performed on a child until their ears have stopped developing (usually around the age of 5 or 6).

The Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty is generally performed on an outpatient basis, but depending on the case, some patients may stay overnight in the hospital or surgical facility. Anesthesia is used for optimal comfort.

Dr. Lawrence uses different otoplasty techniques based on you or your child’s specific goals. If she is treating protruding ears, for example, she will make an incision behind the ears and reshape the cartilage to position the ears closer to the head. She can also remove excess cartilage and skin to reduce oversized ears. Incisions are placed inconspicuously so that they won’t produce noticeable scarring. They are closed with stitches, which remain in place for about a week.

Recovering from Otoplasty

The ears will likely feel tender and swollen after surgery. It’s important to keep the head elevated as much as possible for the first several days of recovery. Any pain can be controlled with prescribed oral medications. You or your child may need to wear a gauze dressing or bandage as the ears heal, and Dr. Lawrence may recommend that you wear a skin band as you sleep to prevent the ears from bending. She will also advise against straining, bending and lifting in the days immediately following surgery. Many people return to their normal activities, including work, within seven to 10 days.

Otoplasty Risks

Otoplasty is a safe surgery, and complications are rare. But Dr. Lawrence will discuss potential risks with you during your surgical consultation. These risks include hematoma, infection, changes in sensation, scarring, allergic reactions and the need for revision surgery.
