Rhinoplasty Atlanta

If you are not happy with the way your nose looks, you are not alone. Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the United States; more than 126,000 procedures were performed in 2011 (according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery). Rhinoplasty requires the surgical skill and fine-tuned aesthetic judgment of an experienced professional like Dr. Marisa Lawrence. As a plastic surgeon Atlanta patients commonly come to for facial surgery treatments, Dr. Lawrence would be happy to speak with you about your rhinoplasty needs during a personal consultation.

Goals of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty may be appropriate for your needs if you relate to one of the following statements:

  • My nose looks too large or wide for my face.
  • I have a bump on the bridge of my nose.
  • My nostrils are oversized or uneven.
  • My tip looks like it is upturned/bulbous/drooping.

Rhinoplasty can also correct a deformity in the internal nasal structures that causes breathing problems.

One of the most important criteria for rhinoplasty candidates is that the nose has stopped developing. Dr. Lawrence will not operate on a teenager whose nose is still growing.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Dr. Lawrence uses one of two rhinoplasty techniques. In an “open” rhinoplasty, she makes an incision across the strip of skin that separates your nostrils. Then, she carefully lifts the skin from the underlying tissue and makes the necessary surgical alterations. The incision is closed with sutures, and may result in a very faint scar which should be inconspicuous. In a “closed” rhinoplasty, Dr. Lawrence makes the rhinoplasty incisions within the nostrils to conceal any scarring. Through the incisions, and depending on your personal rhinoplasty treatment plan, she will alter the cartilage and bone that forms the framework of your nose. She removes excess cartilage, tissue and skin and reshapes the nasal tissue. If you have a functional problem in your nose that affects your breathing (e.g., a deviated septum), she will repair it.

Once she is finished, Dr. Lawrence will close the surgical incisions with stitches or sutures and bandage the nose or use a splint to ensure that it heals properly.

Rhinoplasty may be combined with another procedure such as facelift or eyelid surgery to rejuvenate several areas of the face at once.

Recovering from Rhinoplasty

You will probably feel bruised and swollen after surgery. You may have bruising around your eyes and cheeks for a few days, but this should dissipate quickly. It’s best to get as much rest as possible in the days following your surgery, and to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and straining. Dr. Lawrence may advise you to sleep with your head elevated and to avoid taking aspirin or certain other medications. She will also give you detailed instructions describing how to care for the surgical site and reduce your risk of infection.

Please note that it may take up to a year for all of the swelling to go down and your final rhinoplasty results to reveal themselves.

Rhinoplasty Risks

Every surgery carries some degree of risk, including rhinoplasty. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, asymmetrical results, poor wound healing, permanent numbness, unfavorable scarring and the possibility of revisional surgery. Dr. Lawrence can address these risks during your pre-operative rhinoplasty consultation.
